Wikipedia editing contest about Iran and Norway

In a world with a global pandemic, closed borders and travel restrictions, we can still travel on Wikipedia and share knowledge across national borders. With this in mind Wikimedia Norge and the Iranian Wikimedian User group decided to collaborate on organizing an online Wikipedia editing contest about the two countries.

During the month of June 2020, Wikipedians (volunteer contributors to Wikipedia) on the Farsi, Northern Sámi, Norwegian Bokmål an Norwegian Nynorsk language editions of Wikipedia are invited to take part in an online editing contest writing about each other’s countries. Our hope with this contest is to attain a closer cultural understanding between the two countries by filling knowledge gaps on Wikipedia. One example of doing this is by writing biographies about Iranians in Norwegian and Northern Sámi language and biographies about Norwegians in Farsi language.

Missing articles about Iranians, Sámi, and Norwegians as well as their history and culture will be identified and shared on the writing contest’s Wikipedia pages to give the participants a starting point on what subjects to write about. The lists of missing articles will also have links to existing articles on English Wikipedia which can help for translations.

With this online writing contest, we hope to bridge some knowledge gaps and encourage Wikipedians to write articles about people and subjects that are underrepresented on the Farsi, Northern Sámi, Norwegian Bokmål and Norweagian language editions of Wikipedia. The organizers of the contest will gladly help to connect Iranian and Norwegian Wikipedians who have questions about sources, translations or other issues connected to editing.

Everyone is welcome to take part in the contest and we hope to see a lot of new and improved articles about Iranian, Sámi, and Norwegian subjects. Wikimedia Norge will provide book prizes and diplomas of participation for the 1, 2 and 3 winners from Iran and book gift cards for the Norwegian winners, and the Iranian Wikimedian User group will provide postal cards for the winners from Norway as well.
