6 lessons learned from Arctic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference

The Arctic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference happened 24th–25th of June, after 6 months of planning. Our wish was to indulge the participants in a true Arctic adventure in the city of Tromsø, Norway. For reasons we all know, instead of midnight sun and overly expensive food, we got a global online get-together of enthusiastic, knowledgeable, curious Wikimedians, both experienced and new.

Hva er Abstract Wikipedia?

Regnestykket for Wikipedia er overveldende. Om man regner antall unike artikler på Wikipedia på tvers av alle språk, og ganger det med ca antall språk Wikipedia finnes på i dag får vi det antallet artikler som må skrives for at all verdens kunnskap skal være tilgjengelig for alle på sitt eget språk. I dag gir det oss 6 milliarder artikler tastet inn for hånd av mennesker. Det er et forenklet regnestykke, hvor vi ikke har tatt høyde for ting som nye artikler og nye språkversjoner.

The Arctic Knot Conference Logo

For the Arctic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference we wanted to work with a designer with a good understanding of the Sámi history and culture and try to find a way to reflect this in the conference design. That, and our previous experience with Árvu was the reason we chose to ask them to create the conference logo. The word Árvu means «value»in Northern Sámi, and on their website they write «Árvu is the unique arctic identity».

Call for submissions: Arctic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference

The Call for Submissions for the Arctic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference 2021 is open and runs until 15 April!

We are looking for your most imaginative ideas for how we can host a variety of interesting, engaging, and enlightening talks, workshops, presentations, and events. Are you a Wikidata, Commons, Translation Tool, or other wizard, and you want to help new editors get involved through Arctic Knot? Have you been trying something so innovative that you would like to share with the Wikimedia community?

Looking at the future for indigenous and underrepresented languages and the Wikimedia projects!

The Arctic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference will take place online 24–25 June 2021.

At the Arctic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference we want to look at the future of indigenous and underrepresented languages and their presence and use on the Wikimedia projects. The conference will provide space and focus for indigenous and underrepresented language communities to connect, learn from each other, and collaborate.
