Lightning talk at Wikimedia Diversity Conference

This summer I was lucky enough to land a summer job at Wikimedia Norway. And over the course of two months I interviewed six female contributors from both Norway and Sweden, to get their perspective on the gender gap on Wikipedia. We talked about the gender gap among the contributors, but also the gap in terms of the content on Wikipedia. Like the gender imbalance in biographies, and the lack of articles on topics related to women.

Exploring Wikimedia’s gender gap with six contributors from Scandinavia

Wikipedia aims to offer the sum of all knowledge, but whose knowledge is it? This summer, Sabine Rønsen, a library and information sciences student at the Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences, conducted six interviews with Wikimedia contributors from Norway and Sweden. Her goal was to gain a deeper understanding of why they contribute to the projects and to see how their experiences as women or gender minority participants affect their experiences editing.

Tilgang til Wikipedia blokkert i Tyrkia

Tilgang til kunnskap er grunnleggende i et hvert demokrati. 29. april ble alle språkutgaver av Wikipedia blokkert i Tyrkia. Wikimedia Foundation har skrevet om blokkeringen på sin blogg. Wikimedia Norge stiller seg bak henstillingen Wikimedia Foundation retter til tyrkiske myndigheter om å heve blokkeringen av Wikipedia. Her er et utdrag fra bloggposten, skrevet av Kathrine Maher, Wikimedia Foundation:

«On Saturday, April 29, we learned that the Turkish Internet Regulator (ICTA) implemented a block of all language versions of Wikipedia in Turkey.

Image donation from The National Archive and the immigration of images

The National Archives of Norway have uploaded 5300 images to Wikimedia Commons for public use. The images are from different parts of the collections mostly from the image archives collected by different governmental agencies, such as The Lighthouse board, Department of Corrections and the Ports department. In addition there are also images from private archives, Billedbladet NÅ (a pictorial magasine).

15. januar startet en jakt på fakta du som bibliotekar er spesielt egnet til å delta i! Prosjektet #Faktajakt varer til 3. februar og i den perioden vil vi prøve å mobilisere så mange bibliotekarer som mulig i arbeidet med å utvikle Wikipedia til å bli et enda bedre verktøy. #Faktajakt kan du lese om i den siste utgaven av Bibliotekaren.

Wikimedia Norge + Free Knowledge Advocacy Group EU = More Free Knowledge in Europe

Since 2016 Wikimedia Norge supports the work of the Free Knowledge Advocacy Group EU. A team of European Wikimedia chapters, user-groups and activists have joined forces to making sure free knowledge aspects are taken into account when new European legislation is made. Large parts of this legislations apply to Norway and Norway gets a say in the making process.
